One of the high points to our trip

Spending the day with Francesca during our stay in Italy was one of the high points to our trip. She accommodated 12 of us for a tour: an all day excursion that started in Siena. We had breakfast at a coffee bar that is popular with the locals. After filling our stomachs with delicious pastries, we departed for a scenic drive through the countryside that ended at a monastery. Here, we began with a tour of the buildings and ended with a wine tasting and olive oil tasting. We appreciated  the history of the monastery adding interesting side notes that made the tour much more enjoyable. Next, we went into the town of Montalcino where we had a spectacular lunch and wine pairing  at La Vineria. Here, we ate a relaxing lunch and drank a few different delicious wines. After lunch we were able to explore Montalcino on our own and walk off some of the filling meal. The next stop was the best of the day. Tenuta Le Potazzine!  At this vineyard we were introduced to some of the finest wines in all of Tuscany. We were treated to a very personal tour where we learned the differences in the grades of the Italian wines.

Our next trip to Italy will definitely include a day with Francesca exploring the Tuscan region. Yours should also.

Francesco and Francesca changed my life

Tonight is the anniversary of our first day in Tuscany where we met the two best guides and people on our wonderful trip to celebrate my 50th birthday and that of my friend, Lisa’s birthday (today).

Our guides for the day were Francesca and her husband Francesco.  Two of the most lovely and knowledgeable people to kick of our week with a tour of two  wineries:  Monte Oliveto Maggiore Abbey ( http://www.monteolivetomaggiore.it/lang1/   with a planned stop for lunch at  Le Potazzine and tour of Fortezza Di Montalcino http://www.turismo.intoscana.it/site/it/elemento-di-interesse/Fortezza-di-Montalcino/ )

This tour would never have been near the experience without our Guides.  I cannot thank them enough for a trip that exceeded expectation, and wanted to post this so that others may call upon them should they visit Siena. Francesca comes from a wine tradition and knows her history as well.   So I’ll tell you a wonderful story of our first day and continue to add through the week.

First if you read no further I HIGHLY recommend that you contact them if you’re travelling to the Siena area and to make use of their services.  You can contact her,  she responds promptly and is full of useful information.  Of benefit as well, is that Francesco owns and runs a pizzeria – delicious!!  If you’re interested in our experience, read on…

To begin, Francesca and Francesco met me and my four friends at a Farm House that we rented outside of Siena.  It was a beautiful warm day for touring the Montalcino area and a road trip through Tuscany.   Now we had been prepared because Francesca provided us a detailed itinerary with pictures and historical facts prior to our departure.   So off we were to have a light breakfast at the best pastry shop in Siena, Nannini .  What a wonderful place to start our day.  Now this was the sister shop outside the Siena walls, so be sure to visit both on your journey.  Over pastries and the best coffee one could want, we discussed the plans for the day and were soon off to our day’s adventure.

My friend Betsy and I had the benefit of riding with Francesca in the convertible while the others followed with Francesco.  It was about a 45 minute drive to our first destination which gave us the opportunity to become familiar with one another.  We explained to Francesca that our main purpose to visit Siena was to experience Il Palio (the 500 year-old plus traditional race held twice each year in Siena – a celebration of war and pageantry).   We explained how we were each studying each Contrada (neighborhood) that could participate in Il Palio – Betsy made up folders of each Contrada and handed them out as homework assignments to all of us.  Hers, unfortunately ,was not participating that year.  But she was excited that we took the effort to study the tradition, and told us that she was in the process of writing a book about the great bareback horse race and tradition.  You see the race is only part of the ceremonial week that is part of the full Il Palio experience.  She offered to send us a copy of what she had written  - and she followed up promptly.  What a joy to read a local's insight on this glorious tradition.   So during our ride we talked about the upcoming events and our excitement to partake.  One of my wishes for the week was to somehow have an opportunity to dine with one of the Contrada at their ceremonial meal prior to the race.  But since hers was not participating she did not have any passes for us.  However, she did say she would be on the lookout for an opportunity for us since we were so sincere in our study and enthusiasm for the event.

Next we arrive at Monte Oliveto Maggiore Abbey to tour the Abbey Grounds, Church and Winery.  This was not just a wine tour, but an historical tour as well.  Francesca explained the various frescos, tapestries, rooms, traditions and Abbey history in great detail.  She knows her facts and one could tell the passion she has for the subjects she discusses.   We were fortunate that there was a service that day and listened outside to the beautiful echo of the organ – the distinct acoustics of those in a church or cathedral.

The grounds outside the Abbey are beautiful and scenic.  There’s a restaurant on site as well for wine and appetizers, or lunch if you prefer.  But we were there for the wine tour and we were not disappointed. You see, the Monks at the Abbey make the wine in their original tradition dating back hundreds of years, as well as their olive oil.

What came next was a dream – we toured the winery and cellar and were greeted with a private tasting just for us.  We learned of the traditions as we sipped and sampled wine and cleansed our palate on bread, cheese and meats.

After this wonderful tour, we travelled for a little while to our lunch spot, Osteria la Torre.  Outside we dined in the shade of the patio room surrounded by gardens, eating the freshest food one can find in Italy.  Today’s was our friend Lisa’s birthday and Francesca had arranged for a birthday cake homemade by our hostess at the restaurant.  Lisa couldn’t believe it, and we were overjoyed and so grateful by the welcome and hospitality we received.  Could the day possibly get any better?

Next we travelled a while past Montalcino di Brunello, the birthplace of Brunello wine (one of my favorites).  We drove up to a small winery,  Le Potazzine.  We were greeted by our host  wine tour guide, Michele Moscato with open arms and toured what became one of my favorite wines of the region.  The winery tour is not long, but very interesting.  Post –tour we stopped in a private room for our tastings around a wooden table.  The five of us couldn’t believe the graciousness of our host – he learned that it was Lisa’s birthday that day and gave her a complimentary bottle of a wonderful vintage – our eyes bulged at the generous offering.    After a second great tour, our next stop backtracked to Montalcino.

Now the Fortezza Di Montalcino is a must if have the opportunity to visit.  Lisa and I were the only ones to climb the stairs to the walls overlooking the countryside.  A beautiful 360-degree vista that takes one’s breath away.  A short visit in only required, but the view is a must for those not worried about heights (note: I do not like heights as a rule, but the fortress walls come hip high as you walk the trough around the perimeter).

Afterward we shopped for a few moments to find trinkets to remind us of our day and sat down for a refreshing prosecco in one of the town’s cafés and talked further with Francesca about our planned week and days after that in other areas of Italy.  She was so helpful with her local knowledge it made our further adventures that much more fun.  But wait, there’s more…

I’ll continue later as to how Francesca and Francesco made our first week in Siena even better than expected.

Francesca makes the difference

We have learned in our travels that it's not just where you stay, but even more importantly who you stay with. Francesca is definitely a difference maker and made our stay in Sienna the favorite locale of our two weeks in Italy.  Born and raised in the area, Francesca's love for and knowledge of Siena/Tuscany was incredibly helpful. We relied heavily on her for restaurant & shopping recommendations and even hired her as our personal guide for a tour of Tuscany. The Tuscany tour was unanimously our best day in Italy. We visited three winery's and learned that Franciscan Monk's make very fine wine,  Mozart's music improves grape quality, and most importantly that life is too short to drink bad wine. During the tour we also visited a monastery,  toured an ancient castle and had an awesome lunch in Montalcino. The natural beauty of Tuscany along with its incredible history, and wonderful food & wine all came together on this very memorable tour!  We are very happy to have chosen Siena as our base in Tuscany and were truly blessed to have Francesca as our hostess.

Can't recommend her highly enough

I can't describe how wonderful our stay was with Francesca. she was so helpful and attentive. She was always ready to help, and we had a wonderful wine tasting tour with her. I am looking forward to the next opportunity to visit Tuscany -- we will be staying with Francesca. I can't recommend her highly enough.

Francesca wanted to make sure we had a positive experience during our tour:  I went on a tour with her, my wife, and my three daughters and she was very sweet to my daughters by making sure they were happy.  She even got hugs from my girls at the end because she made them all feel wonderful!  She is very knowledgeable and her English speaking skills were great.  She answered all our questions and was always asking us if she could do anything to make the tour better and what we wanted to do.  We had a wonderful time in Montalcino and then in Pienza.  She even stopped a couple times so we could take scenic pictures on the ride to these places.

This is the perfect place to enjoy your Tuscan holiday! Right in the Chianti wine region, you can stay cool under the Tuscan sun by sitting in the pool that overlooks olive groves and grape vineyards. Bellissima! Good proximity to many other sites, and a quick drive to Sienna. The house was very comfortable for our 2 visiting families, and Francesca was the perfect host! Very knowledgeable and proud of her Tuscan heritage. She and her Mama cooked many delicious dinners for us, and also taught us a Tuscan cooking class al fresco! She was also so good with our toddlers, very accommodating and playful with them. We look forward to staying here again and again. This place truly represents Bella Toscana!

Perfect house in a perfect setting. Recently retired, I took my first trip to Italia! Traveling with two female companions, we each wanted our own space in a setting that was easily accessible to Siena while affording us the ability to drive around Tuscany. We found that in La Capanna. Capanna was refurbished into a lovely living setting with a spectacular view of lush vineyards. With our rental car, the drive to Siena was about 5 - 10 minutes, where we could easily park and wander about the town. The house is close to supermarkets and local eateries. The house has a fully equipped kitchen for nights we chose not to dine out. The area surrounding the house is spacious and extremely private. There is a pool and hot tub available and during the time we were there, we used hot tub and found it incredibly relaxing. The homeowner, Francesca, is an absolute joy to work with. Not only is she most accommodating, she arranges and provides tours. She is knowledgeable and fun to be with if one chooses. We found Francesca to be very helpful and she responded to our emails quickly. We especially enjoyed having dinner at the restaurant: La Colonna, which is owned by Francesca's husband, and where we had the best pizza in Tuscany! I highly recommend La Capanna for anyone seeking the opportunity to spend time near Siena and explore the beauty of Tuscany.

WOW! I don't even know where to begin! My husband and I took our eight month old son to Italy for our first family vacation. As part of that, we wanted to stay somewhere in Tuscany away from the busy cities. This property was perfect!

Our wonderful host Francesca was also able to provide us with a high chair and baby bed, which made our trip so much easier as we did not have to bring our own.

The house is very large and I was really impressed with the size of each bedroom and the size of the beds. You could easily have six adults stay comfortably. The kitchen was perfect for making our own meals and the great room was so comfortable, especially when we enjoyed the fireplace after a day of touring beautiful Siena and the countryside.

We did make use of the hot tub and I can only imagine how beautiful this place would be during the Spring and Summer.

It was a great location (you will need a car) and close to wineries, restaurants and of course, beautiful Siena.

Overall, this place exceeded our expectations. This was our favourite part of our two week holiday. (We spent time in Florence and Rome). I wish we had stayed here longer. We would definitely stay here again when we return to Italy and have already recommended this to friends and family.

Grazie Francesca!

A beautiful home set in a perfect location in the heart of Tuscany, over looking a Vineyards. I can't say enough about our host Francesca and her husband, they went out their way several times to makes our vacation perfect. If you planning a trip to the region don't miss the opportunity to stay at their Villa. They also organized for us a wine tour and cooked a dinner for us: Francesca's husband is a cooker, he has a Restaurant in Siena. Definite don't miss.

We (4 of us) had a great week at a wonderful house, with a very gracious hostess and Host. Usually when you see pictures of a home or hotel you expect (hope) that it is 75% as nice as the pictures. This house was far nicer than the pictures could ever suggest. Loaded with amenities and privacy, I would call it a gem. Anything you could need is provided for you at the home, just do some grocery shopping and bring your toothbrush. Begin each day looking out over quiet vineyards and farmland, and finish each day in the hot tub sipping wine watching fire flies lighting up the valley below. We couldn't say enough good things about our hostess Francesca and her husband either. When was the last time you could say that you actually miss a host or hostess after you leave an accommodation. These are those type of hosts. This is truly a place I will recommend to all my friends, and if travelling to Tuscany you should not miss.

It is hard to know whether to start with the Villa or with Francesca, the owner, because both made our stay an incredible experience. So I will start with both, because Francesca has put her heart into making the Villa wonderful. She is an architect, and everything inside and out is beautiful. Everything is very clean, the bathrooms large and the beds comfortable. The Jacuzzi is great, and the views outside are gorgeous. It is a perfect distance from Siena, you are in the beautiful countryside but an easy drive into town, and because it is not a long drive to the highway, it is also an easy drive anywhere in Tuscany. As wonderful as the Villa is, Francesca makes it even better. Her English is very good, and she dedicates herself to helping you enjoy yourself. She recommended a seafood restaurant in Poggibonsi, and made the reservation for us. The restaurant gave us a great welcome and dinner. We also ate at the restaurant where he husband cooks and it was terrific. She lead us by car to the grocery store, and was always available by email or phone if we had a question, and continuously gave us great advice to help us enjoy our vacation. We give this villa the highest recommendation, and look forward to returning.

Very nice and well equiped villa with a very nice view on the hills of Siena, situated about 5 minutes by car from the city center. The owner, Francesca, is very friendly and offers a very good service. The three rooms are very confortable and the kitchen is well equiped. You can use the outdoor spa. The bathrooms are clean and large, but there is only one shower which is not much for 6 persons, but Francesca is about to add another one.

We will allways remember these two marvellous weeks near Sienna in this superb property located in the middle of the vinyards. The house is big, very comfortable, nicely decorated and the kitchen is quite big. It was clean and had everything we needed. The garden is very pleasant with the pool, the big jaccuzzi and the hamac. The place was even better than anticipated. Bedrooms are big, the living room is huge and the six of us had plenty of space in this house. It is very easy to get to the beautiful city of Sienna, to visit so many medieval villages around, taste different wines, only 1 h from Florence. Perfect location. It is very quiet. We really recommend this place and would like to go back. The owner Francesca is very nice, she gave us many information and suggestions for places to visit.

We just spent a week at Capanna al lago near Seina. What a beautiful villa! It is off the main road, so it is very quiet and peaceful. The views of the Tuscany hillsides is fantastic. It is better than the pictures. It is very reasonably priced compared to others we looked at.Francesca, the owner, is a great host. It was perfect for our family of 7. The pool was a little cool in September, but we made great use of the hot tub.The location is very nice just outside Siena. A COOP (grocery store) is a 10 minute drive. It was really centrally located for visiting the numerous Tuscany hilltowns and also close to Florence. We took advantage of a catered meal one evening which Francesca and her mother cooked for us. What a treat! Excellent food and we learned a lot about traditional Tuscany cooking. We thoroughly enjoyed our week here. Thank you Francesca for such a great week.

We arrived at Capanna al Lago and were met by the property owner, Francesca who showed us round and explained how to operate the hot tub. Her English was very good and she told us a bit of the history of the property and places of interest in the area and even drove to the supermarket with us following. Don't think we would have found it very easily on our own!!The property was fantastic, better than the pictures. It had everything we could possibly want.  The beds were very comfortable and everywhere was spotless and the jacuzzi bath an added bonus. Outside was a beautiful garden area with a small swimming pool and a hot tub which both overlooked the Tuscany countryside. There was also a barbecue and we made good use of all these things. A very well maintained and much loved property!!Francesca arranged a taxi for us to take us to Sienna for a special meal at La Taverna di San Giuseppe - lovely restaurant for a special meal. She was also available on the end of the phone (she gave us a mobile phone to use while we there) and on e-mail if we needed anything. On the day we left Francesca came to say goodbye and even had a few little gifts for us.There are two things you might want to note when deciding if this is the place for you. One is there are beams in the third bedroom so if everyone in your party is over six foot this could be a little difficultl! The second is there is no shop or restaurant within walking distance although you can find both only a very short drive away along very quiet roads.  That said if you want a restful holiday in a beautiful property in the glorious Tuscan countryside owned by a charming lady who speaks very good English and does everything possible to ensure her guests needs are met, then this is definitely the place for you!We had a fabulous holiday at Capanna al Logo and would recommend it and Francesca to anyone looking for a relaxing holiday in beautiful surroundings.

While taking many trip in beautiful Tuscany, LA Capanna was a great place to come back to every time. Not only the quiet environment and breathtaking view were very attractive, also the villa itself had all we had hoped for, and more !You can sense a dedicated architect had created and build this house : big and thick walls, vast first floor dressed with solid wood, and not to forget the beautiful detailing of kitchen, bathrooms and bedrooms.Francesca is not ony a great architect. Her hospitality and warm personality will make you feel safe and welcome even before you arrive ! She is always available when needed, and she fully respects your privacy. Both house and host are extra reasons for us to return some day.
